nothing matters

Graduate Thesis, 2024
5 x 8.5 inch / 208 pages

“What we require is silence; but what silence requires is that I go on talking.”
John Cage, 1961

This thesis discusses the concept of nothingness through the lens of art, philosophy, and everyday experiences. Through the exploration of the usage of nothingness in art and design, the thesis highlights how nothingness is utilized to evoke emotions, provoke contemplation, and challenge societal norms. Ultimately, this research emphasizes the interconnectedness of existence and the transformative power of embracing moments of silence, absence, and ambiguity in navigating the complexities of human life.
Graduate Thesis Inquiries Exhibition
In order to understand nothingness as an essential element of communication, I have made various examples of nothingness based on different interpretations from artists, designers, friends, and philosophers across the world. Sequences of p5js codings, photographs, posters and illustrations are presented on two sides of the edge of the wall.

I printed my makings of nothingness on fabric cloth, as cloth is used as a metaphor for eastern nothingness. Nothingness is versatile and formless like a cloth, and it embodies any shape of an object when used as a carrier. The formlessness of nothingness is also displayed as black sand on the floor.
