Study On Web

Installation, Research, 2022

In this project, I explored a simple tool, spider web, in different contexts such as how the spider detects the vibration of a web and how it wraps its web to catch its prey. I made an installation with my classmates to explore the meaning of communication in this digital era, through collecting personal objects and memories from the past.

Group Installation

Co-designer: Annie Hoang, Angela Gao

We, as individual, undertook a series of research and design development, incrementally building toward a synthesis of ideas, content and form. Now as a team, our final challenge will be to bring together a unified meta-narrative, and to stage it in physical space for audience access, interaction and view.

We stopped thinking about how each tool functions individually but more about how have we been challenging the normalcy of these tools over the past few weeks. Selina used spider web to contain one's information and privacy, Angela uses reflection to record one's daily life and I use music to stimulate one's emotions. With that in mind, we see the commonality between all of our tools, which is to evoke sensory all around us.

We've been collecting fragments of our daily life and memories to put together here in this installation. The sounds and projection of videos / memories are to reinforce and connect your overall connection to this piece. Inside these cement blocks, you will find stories reflected on the mirror surface. Inspired by the confession by the church, we, as a "priest", will listen in your confession on your favorite memories through (this open hole over here). Not only that you see, hear and touch the "memories", you are encouraged to talk about it as well.
